Heart and Soul

Like many pantries, the Kidder County Food Pantry is run by a handful of board members and volunteers. The pantry currently has two board members (and searching for a third), as well as 5 volunteers that help when needed. The board members dedicate an average of nine hours per month and the volunteers average around three hours monthly.

Brenda Schulz is one of those volunteers. She is a second generation volunteer of the pantry and really pours her heart and soul into her duties at the pantry. She assists with finding new volunteers and helps manage operating on their limited budget and space. Brenda knows there are people that need assistance and without volunteers, like her, there wouldn’t be anyone to help them through the hard times.

During the holiday months, Brenda also participates in a program called “The Giving Tree” in the county.  She collects a “wish list” from people in the community that are in need. The list includes clothing, shoes, boots, coats and a special wish. Brenda writes these items on cards and attaches them to trees around the county. Community members donate gifts and they are distributed with the food boxes at Christmas time.

The Kidder County Food Pantry helps, on average, 23 families per month. The pantry also participates in the Backpack Program; putting together backpacks full of food for kids to help with proper nourishment over the weekend and school breaks. The need for the pantry’s assistance has increased recently. Fortunately, the pantry has amazing support from the community.

While the pantry has a great number of local donations they are currently in need of individual portioned canned fruit and other food for the Backpack Program. If you are interested in donating items for the Backpack program, please contact the pantry for the items that can be used.
